Trump's personality guides his response to Coronavirus situation
As Coronavirus hits US, the lack of preparedness is quite visible on part of US Govt. I would say that this lack of preparedness is a direct result of failure at the top of the Chain - that is the Trump's white house. At least since Early January, Trump knew (or should have known) that a crisis may be coming if Coronavirus reaches America. But he did not prepare any strategy for this eventuality.
There has been all kind of lapses like botched up evacuation of Americans from Wuhan as the medical staff involved in that effort lacked proper training & protective equipment. Then CDC had no testing kits even when this is the most critical stage to control & contain the infection in its early days (in my opinion, US should have had at least 1 million testing kits on standby). Then there was confusion over treatment & testing costs, confusion over insurance coverage, confusion over eligibility of testing etc. There were all kinds of problems. The errors and mistakes continue to happen everyday.
But the central problem of Coronavirus response starts with Trump and White house. To understand Trump's response to situation, its necessary to judge Trump's actions from perspective of his personality & its traits. I can clearly see Trump's Narcissism and Psychopathy at display.
Trump doesn't listen to experts, healthcare professionals, Scientists, technocrats etc in the field. He makes his own projections and assertions even without any knowledge on the subject. Trump tries to portrait that he's more knowledgeable than people around him. His assertions and statements are dangerously misinforming American people about the crisis.
Trump is RECKLESS, endangering public safety & general health of people. This is very important point to understand. Trump believes that economy should get back to normal. Stock markets should get back to its highs. Everything should be as it was. Trump disregards the underlying public health emergency and RISKS to general public posed by this emergency situation. But Trump wants people to be working even in possibly hazardous conditions. It also appears that Trump is disregarding his own personal safety by going to events and public meetings where he's prone to infection risk.
Trump's callous attitude & lack of empathy. Trump doesn't show any remorse about the deaths and tragedy of people. Trump's ignorance & lack of preparedness is actually contributing to deaths of people and tragedies. But Trump doesn't seem to care at all.
Trump doesn't tolerate any criticism. Anybody who questions Trump's actions is attacked by Trump. Trump says Coronavirus emergency is a new Hoax by Democrats like impeachment. Trump in his rallies continues to mock his critiques including Democrats, liberals, media like CNN etc and fake news.
Its clear that Trump can't provide any leadership in time of crisis. Actually many experts feared that America would be vulnerable in times of a national crisis. Some experts feared that Trump's control over Nuclear weapons is a danger. I think America may be in this kind of situation. A national crisis under leadership of Trump who cannot deliver on anything.
But there is an alternative. Just few days ago, Congress/Senate overwhelmingly passed emergency spending plans for Coronavirus response. I think Democrats can work with GOP on this issue. While Republicans are opportunistic self serving politicians who protected Trump from impeachment, i don't think Republicans are crazy enough to disregard a situation of national emergency. Pelosi & Schumer should try to find a working strategy with GOP Senators & Congresspersons to pass bipartisan legislation to deal with Coronavirus emergency.
